Red Light Camera — Miami-Dade

The same video.
A different stage.
A different
decision.

What happens next depends on the document you are holding right now — not just the image the camera captured. The stage of the matter determines what is still available.

Which Document Do You Have?

  • Notice of Violation — $158
  • Uniform Traffic Citation — $277+
  • Something else entirely

The document name and amount tell you which stage you are in — and what that means.

01 — Where You Are Changes Everything

The notice and
the ticket are
not the same
situation.

Most people who contact us about a red light camera matter are already past the notice stage. Understanding which situation you are in is the first step.

If You Have the $158 Notice

Notice of Violation

This is the first stage. The camera program sends a civil notice to the registered owner. At this stage there are no points and the notice carries a 60-day response window.

The video of the event is available to review. If the notice is not addressed within the window, the matter can advance to a traffic citation — with a higher amount and different consequences.

If You Have the Traffic Ticket

Uniform Traffic Citation

The notice stage has passed. This is now a formal traffic citation with its own deadline, its own response process, and consequences that are different from the original $158 notice.

At this stage the license may already be affected. The situation is different — and the options available are different too.

02 — How the Notice Stage Gets Missed

The notice
arrives. It does
not always
register.

The bulk of the people who contact us about red light camera matters are already holding a traffic ticket — not the original $158 notice.

There are a few reasons this happens. The notice arrives by mail and may not look like an official government document at first glance. It may be set aside with other mail. It may go to an old address. In some cases it may simply not arrive.

Whatever the reason, by the time the situation gets attention, the matter has often already advanced — the amount is higher, the license may be affected, and the original options are no longer on the table.

Missing the notice does not stop the process. The matter moves forward on its own timeline — whether or not the notice was received.

03 — What the Escalation Means

When it becomes
a ticket, the
situation changes.

The $158 civil notice and the traffic citation that follows are not the same thing. Understanding what changed matters before deciding what to do next.

The Amount Is Higher

Miami-Dade County typically issues the citation at $277 or more — significantly above the original $158 notice amount.

It Is Now a Traffic Citation

The matter is no longer an administrative civil notice. It follows the procedures of a formal traffic citation — with its own deadline and its own process.

The License May Be Affected

In many cases by the time the citation arrives, the license has already been suspended. That suspension is a separate issue that also needs attention.

The Record Is Now Involved

Paying the citation at this stage typically results in a guilty disposition on the record. There are no points — but the disposition appears. That is a personal decision each person makes for themselves.

04 — Before You Do Anything

Start with the
document and
the deadline.

The right next step depends entirely on what you are holding and how much time remains.

What Is the Document Called?

Notice of Violation or Uniform Traffic Citation — the name tells you which stage you are in and which set of options applies.

What Is the Deadline?

For the original notice, the response window is 60 days from notification. For the citation, a different deadline applies. Use the date on the document — not the date you received it.

Is the License Affected?

If the matter has been pending for some time, the license may already be suspended. That needs to be confirmed before anything else is addressed.

What Does the Video Show?

If you are still at the notice stage, the video is available to review. What it shows is relevant to any decision about how to respond to the notice.
